Perhaps Today You Gave a Nod to Sweeney Todd

Richard Carroll
To seek revenge may lead to Hell But everyone does it, and seldom as well As Sweeney, as Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street! Last month, feeling 100% in the Halloween spirit, I was looking for something seasonal to listen to. My go-to album for that time of year is Tales of Mystery and Imagination, but this year I felt like something more intense and listened to the original Broadway cast’s recording of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, which I hadn’t listened to in years.

Sweeney Todd

Warning: This review contains spoilers, so don’t read it if you haven’t seen Sweeney Todd and don’t want to know major plot points in advance. I went to see Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, director Tim Burton’s new film, Saturday morning. It was definitely the first horror musical I’ve ever seen, and unfortunately one of the few musicals of any sort made since 1960 or so. (Note, though, that I have not seen the original stage musical the film is based on, so I can’t comment on it).
